Problem with External Hard Drive

I just bought a Buslink USB 2/Firewire combo Hard drive @ best buy, 80 GB version.

Last night, plugged it in using Firewire to my desktop, had no problem moving all the files i wanted to it.

But today, using USB 2 version, the hard drive just doesn't work! I'm on my laptop at school, and it recognizes that the hard drive is there, but one of 3 things happens

1) won't let me execute/copy files from HDD

2) won't open HDD in explorer

3) HDD doesn't become recognized anymore.

Buslink claims the USB 2 version has full support with winXP, but it doesn't seem like it at all to me. And it's not the port, tested it with all 3 ports on my computer, none work with it, all work with my mouse/printer. Should I just suck it up and buy a 6-pin firewire to 4-pin connector and not bother with the USB? What do i do?

The Firewire hookup will be faster but you still should be able to use both....do you have SP1 installed in the Lappy? The printer and Mouse wouls work cause they are in USB Full Speed Mode, whereas even with USB Full Speed enabled the HD would be seen but transfer speeds much slower after a warning from XP

Yeah, the SP1 is installed in the laptop, still nothing.

It seems like sometimes, I'll have access to it for a bit, but then it will end access. i.e. i'll start a song, and it will play 6 seconds of it, and cut out.

Could it be a cable problem? I won't be able to test the cable til i get home this weekend.

*Update*

Just tested it with my firewire cable down the hall, and it works fine with that. Everything is A-OK.


Can anyone think of ANYTHING that would cause it to do this?
