Problem with DVD+RW

I wanted to burn a home-made video onto a DVD+RW so that I can share it with my friends ( using ImgBurn). As the disc had data in it I had to erase the disc. However when the erasing was 98% completed my computer stops responding and the DVD drive started to make some funny noises . I left it alone for another 20 mins but the noise continues and the progress bar still at 98%. I decided to shut down the computer ( by turning off the power). After I restarted, I tried re-inserting the disc and tried erasing the disc again, but this time ImgBurn wouldn't recognise the DVD ( there was an error message saying something like ' The Logical drive is not ready' - no screenshots sorry). When I double clicked the DVD icon in my computer, it says: please insert a disc into E:. I tried doing it in Linux ( same machine), but the drive wouln't mount. On an iMac, the drive will pop out the DVD after 15 or so seconds.

The recoding surface of the disc is mildly scratched at the edges, but otherwise fine ( my other DVD+RWs are way scratchier and they work fine). The manufacturer is Imation. The disc is roughly 6 months old. I'm suspecting that the incomplete erase caused some file system damage, does anyone know how to repair it?

Thanks

Re-writable dvds have too many problems for me to bother with. I too, guess the disc is toast.

It's easily been more than 2 years since I paid more than a dime for write-once dvd blank (usually good quality ones, mostly Verbatim). At that price, I use them for everything except my settop recorder (use dvd-ram there).
