Problem with DVD and CDRW... help please...

ok... this has only happened like three times in the past few months... i'm doing whatever on my computer and suddenly my hard drive activity LED lights up (hard drives not spinning and DVD and/or CDRW not in use), my DVD drive's activity LED lights up (both stay lit up), and the DVD and CDRW drives disappear from the device manager (and from the rest of windows consequently)... I have to reboot to get them working (recognized) again... my hard drives remain functional and the system doesn't show or report any errors... for the record I have both hard drives on IDE channel 0 and the DVD drive and CDRW drive on IDE channel 1... I haven't tried mixing the configuratin because of my case configuration (putting a hard drive (master) and cd drive (slave) on one channel)... any suggestions as to what's causing this... it isn't really a big problem since it doesn't happen too often... but it is quite annoying when it does happen... i'm considering my DVD drive as the culprit as it has recently started giving me read errors from regularly pressed CDs... but not from CD-Rs or RWs or DVDs... my DVD drive is a PIONEER 115 16x DVD ROM and my CDRW is a YAMAHA CRW3200E 24x10x40... this had happened with an older CDRW drive back in March I believe... anyways... I'll appreciate any help and/or comment... see my rig link below for the rest of my system specs...

BUMP... I need some advice please...

UPDATE: not the DVD drive... the same thing just happened with the DVD drive disconnected...

Not the IDE cable... I just bought and installed some rounded IDE cables last week... this problem has been going on for some months now... just happened to me again like three hours ago...

blow out your IDE controller on that install try that(in DevManager) and refresh your IDE by doing that..WinXP will just rebuild it....more likely a mobo ide plugin(those little plastic interconnects do develop intermittent contact loss if soldered bad..) ..even could be dust bunnies..

I'll try that... and maybe even take a vacum to the case... been about six months since I last cleaned it... hehe... might be kinda dirty... I'll keep ya posted... thanx for the tip...
