Problem with docking station for Dell 8100 laptop

I just purchased a new 8100 laptop and docking station. For some reason the docking station does not power the laptop when plugged in. The laptop just runs off battery power. This can't be right. Am I missing something here? The A/C adapter for the docking station is certainly plugged in.

hm, i dunno - it should just work.

does the power button on the docking station work to turn on the laptop? are any of the lights on for the docking station?
