The DNS server of my @home cable connection is pathetically slow to respond. Can anybody offer any alternative server suggestions?

Thanks

If you are talking about DNS service for your own domain name, checkout ZoneEdit.com. If you mean that your regular web surfing is slow because DNS is taking too long to resolve, I don't think there's a solution to that.

You can use just about anyone's DNS. The advantage with using one on the network that you're connected to is that *usually* it's faster. Most providers don't restrict queries. Sooo, you could try someone else's DNS. I have no idea what would be close/fast for you though.

Damaged,

Really? I was under the impression that an ISP would not be a happy camper if you use their servers and are not a customer.

Also, I'm thinking that, at least in my case with DSL and fixed IP addresses, the modem wouldn't even train if pointed at someone elses DNS. Is cable different?

I often use GTEi's DNS in the field if I need to hook something up quickly, only because they are insanly easy to remeber. 4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2 and finally 4.2.2.3, :) Yes you can use any DNS, it just might not be that fastest.

If set it up so that each DNS server is from a different source so that if your ISP's DNS goes blank, it would automatically use somebody else DNS, would this work?

Russ, DNS servers are kind of public domain, heck you can even set it up just to use the root servers. ISP's may not like people from the outside using their DNS server but it would be hard to stop them, and it takes so little processor/bandwidth why fret?
