Problem with display on old Dell laptop

Hi ,
I have an older, refurbished laptop that for some reason, is not displaying correctly. The display is too dark, much to dark to see.
Examples below:
without a light on close by
and
with light close

As you can see, the laptop cannot be used without being hooked up to a monitor. The waranty is no longer valid, and I am afraid that taking it to the shop would cost a lot of money (they usually charge an arm and a leg to open up a laptop..). Any ideas what could be wrong?

Thanks for the help!

~80% chance the backlight power inverter board is dead
~20% the FL backlight tube is burned out

Getting dell replacement parts ???

I would say more like:
50% that the FL tube is burnt out or broken
25% that a cable is loose
24% that the FL inverter is burnt out
1% that a fuse has blown
