Problem with disk defragmenter

I just got an SN25p and installed some programs on it. I tried to run disk defragmenter and when I try to run DF, it freezes a little and then I can select something, but when I try to select something it freezes again. I found online that I can run DF in safe mode and was able to successfully do that, but when I try to even analyze the drive, it does the same thing again. Anybody have suggestions on what I should do?
