Problem with Dell Inspiron 6000

When I'm using my laptop, typing a paper or even this post the cursor will jump around, sometimes in the middle of the sentence it jumps to the beginning or in between a word I've already typed. While typing a paper it will go from where I am typing to the middle of the paper or back to the beginning.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Move your cursor outside of the window and try again.

Also, see if you can disable the trackpad on your Dell, especially if you use an external mouse.

Moving the cursor doesn't matter, and I don't use an external mouse. This problem really has me confused. Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't.

From my experience, on Windows, if you bump the trackpad while typing, you cause it to jump and then you type in an inconvenient location.

Inspiron 6000 only has a touchpad, is that right?

You are probably bumping the touchpad. Try this:

Open your doc and get started. Then go to Control Panel-->Mouse and there should be options in there to turn the touchpad off. Try that, ALt-Tab back to your document, and start typing. See if the problem continues.

If that solves it, go back to the Mouse menu and turn the touchpad on. Then browse into the more advanced options and there should be some type of "Palm sensitivity" setting or something - basically it helps reduce sensitivity if your palm is touching the pad accidentally. It happens a lot

I don't think I'm bumping the touchpad, but I will give your suggestions a shot. The reason I think it is something else is because I often place the cursor off screen and my hands stay clear of the touchpad.
