Problem with defrag utility on Win Xp

hey guys,

my computer has slowed down a ton and i'm very suspicious that my hard drives are at fault. the computer easily recognizes C: which was always installed in the computer. I then bought a second hard drive, 180GB much later and installed it myself. it works perfectly, i can run disk clean up and actually store most of my stuff on there. Unfortunately it seems that the only utility that doesnt recognize its existence is Defrag. it works in every other respect. the bios seems to be setup ok as evidenced by the fact that hte HD works fine in all other respects. i've been using it for about 7-8 months and have only tried to defrag for the first time yesterday. defrag even recognized the flash drive that was plugged into the USB port.

the only thing i can supsect is that its a propiertary machine (Emachines) and for some reason this is preventing recognition by defrag??

Please please give me advice.

Thanks.

As a follow up: I'm running WIN XP. and when i tried to use Drive Cleanup on my 2nd hard drive it also failed saying make sure drive is connected and drive door is closed.

However, as I've been saying all along, I have a lot of files stored on the 2nd drive which I can access with no problems
