problem with DB made with Access 97

have a company I work with from time to time who has a DB that was built for them in Access 97. It's not password protected to open, but on the main menu to get into the settings there is a password. I've tried to open it in every version of Office from XP to 2007. Here's what it says.

The Current user account doesn't have permission to convert or enable this database

I can't change ownership in the DB as it has a password. Whoever made it for them is long gone and nobody at the office ever knew the password. I tried a few DB password cracking programs I found on Google, but they all just look for a main password. Is there any program that can retrieve this password so I can get them into the DB in something outside of Office 97?

Have you looked at the code-behind that button? I have a feeling they may have hardcoded a password in the code to edit the settings.

thanks for the replies both of you, I'm a DB noob and I guess my theory was wrong, it's not due to a password, it's due to lack of ownership, when I go into the security settings I'm seeing <Unknown> as owner for all the tables. apparently this is the problem.

WildHorse - I can't open it no.
