problem with connecting to wireless network on startup

I traded my friend a desktop for his laptop and I bought a wireless card for the laptop because we have a wireless network set up in our house.

Windows will detect the network on startup and appear to connect to it, but it won't let me connect to the internet or anything until I right click on the entwork notification icon and select "View Availble Wireless Networks" then I check the box that says "Allow me to connect to this wireless network, even though it is not secure"

After that, I have to remove the PC Card and put it back in to get windows/the network to let me connect to the internet.

Why must I do this everytime and is there a way around it?

(with details, because I suck with networking :eek: )

Sonds like it is not building the IP Protocol stack properly.

I am having the same problem I think. How do you rebuild the IP stack in Windows XP?

Problems with my Toshiba Laptop: Satellite Pro 2455-S3001

My major problem is with my D-Link Wireless Card DWL-650+ and maintaining an Internet connection with a D-Link Wireless Route DI-614+.

1. There are 2 other laptops-Dells-that have the same cards (and 2 desktop PCs) and they have had no problems over the past several months connecting to the net or keeping the connection.
2. When I turn on the Toshiba, the D-Link card does not become enabled by the Toshiaba laptop. An internal Toshiba WIFI card can access the router but loses the signal after 2-3 minutes.
3. I have the router WEP encrypted.
4. Reloaded the D-Link Wireless Card software to no avail.

Any ideas? Could there be a registry problem? I talked to a D-Link rep, reset XP to a previous configuration, all to no avail.

HA! I had the same problem with my dwl650 card. (Before it crapped out on me.) I updated the firmware, and I think that solved the problem. But I also had to insert the card after the computer was booted up for it to work each time.

As I just said in anther thread, I was really disappointed with the dlink gear. The card eventaully would work for a while, then it would freeze up. If I pulled the card out, the system stared responding again. Their tech support told me to replace the card. Google showed many other people had the same problem. So I ended up getting a netgear card, and I haven't had a problem yet.

I was using the DLink software, btw, not the windows stuff.

Thanks, I will try what you did. If nothing else works I will get another card, like Netgear.

Guess what? I uninstalled all D-LinK software and then reinstalled (which I had done many times before) and by magic the D-Link card work. Go figure! I bet my registry is involved. Thanks for the response.
