Problem with Chaintech GeForce 6600GT PCI-Express Video Card

I just bought a new Chaintech GeForce 6600GT 128MB PCI-Express Video Card and installed it in my Dell Dimension 8400 (P4 3.0 Ghz, 1GB SDRAM) today to replace the ATI Radeon X300SE that came with it. I had been playing Far Cry for a few hours just fine (I hadn't tried overclocking the card yet) when suddenly I heard a click, the monitor when black, and the power-on button on my Dimension started flashing orange. I shut down the computer, but everytime I tried to boot it up, the power-on light would flash orange and the computer would not boot up at all. With the help of Dell tech support, we were able to identify the video card as the source of the problem. Before I send the card back, I thought I ask for some opinions here on whether my card is defective, did it overheat, or is my computer just not capable of handling it? I was debating on whether to go with this card or a Leadtek 6600GT, snd had decided on the Chaintech because it had dual DVI output.

Does the computer work with the ATI card installed?

I don't think anyone is surprised that Dell told you it was the non-Dell item causing the problem. 🙂

It could've overheated, or it could've just been defective.

Always make sure you have all your PCI cards as far away from the video card as possible, as well. Might want to try it in another computer, as it might be the power supply.

I'm assuming your X300 still works when you put it back in?

Basically, what we did was remove all of the PCI cards, the video card, and the RAM modules, and put them back in the computer one by one to pinpoint what was causing the problem. When I put the Chaintech card in, I got the flashing orange light and was unable to boot the computer. But, when I reinstalled the ATI card, everything was back to normal. The 8400 only has 3 PCI slots, and they're all occupied (sound card, modem, Hauppague PVR 150 TV tuner). The PCI-Express slot is right next to the top PCI slot.

Way to go Dell. If the cards are too close to the video card, it may not be getting the airflow it's supposed to.

Dell is junk. When you get the new geforce, make sure the smallest PCI card (the one most likely to allow airflow) is the one closest to the video card.
