Problem with CDRW disc: Need help recovering data

Hi,

I just got a message from a family friend about a CDRW problem that he's having. Instead of rewording what he said, I'm just going to copy and paste his message to me.

I have been saving photos from my digital camera to a Re writeable CD. I had around 320 meg stored on my disk. Having a DSL line I remain online 24/7, the other night I was attaching some of the pictures from my dad's birthday party to some E- Mail letters. I may have left the computer for the night without disengaging from my CD drive, the next day I could no longer access the CD disk menue. I have tried all the usual ways but the disk shows up blank, however when I click on "Properties" it shows the disk is about 50% full. Also I am not able to record anything else to this disk and receive a disk error message.

Any ideas on what could've happened? I don't ever use CDRW disc's, so I don't know what the problem could be. I don't think it has anything to do with him being online all the time though.

If anyone has any ideas on what he could do to recover the data, it would be most appreciated!

TIA,

Sal

Not sure what happened either, but I think that erasing it will make the disc functional again. Has the person been able to view the contents of the CD on another computer?

It sounds like the data is there, but he can't get access to it. He keeps getting errors when he tries to add to it too. I'm sure he doesn't want to erase it considering that he has his dad's b-day photos on it. He's getting up there in years and it might be the last good set of photos he gets of him.

Any other ideas? I can run the other computer by him. I would assume that he's tried that though.

Thanks again.

hopefully the disc contents havent been corrupted somehow....🙁

i dont know how to help you, but i have had the same problem happen to me (but on a cdr, so i couldnt even erase and see if that would fix the problem...)

This is gonna sound dumb...I've had the same prob to me w/a CDR. I removed the CD, rebooted, put CD back in and all was well. Restarts fix 99% of all problems out there.

Well.. We've tried everything and still no go. Is there any kind of software or some way to recover these files?

Thanks again.

Has anyone tried a place like this?

I wonder what they would charge? I guess the photo's are pretty much priceless, so you'd have to weigh the cost vs. the memories.

Thanks again.
