Problem with CD Rom

I am home from college and my brother has my old Dell Dimension and somehow now when I try to use the DVD rom and it reads the CD I immediately get the blue screen of death. I was just going to reinstall win 98 but I am not sure if I can boot from the DVD. The bios also shows that the DVD is in installed.
 
try uninstalling and reinstalling it first, if that doesnt fix the problem, replace the drive...

Have you tried:

- A real DVD
- A burnt CD
- A real CD (Both data and audio)
- Reinstalling drivers (remove from Device Mgr and reboot ... let it redetect etc)
- Updating drivers form the vendor
- Updating firmware from the vendor
- Uninstalling everything that's been installed since it worked last (assuming that's only a few days and not a half a year since Christmas or whenever you were home last)
- Turning off AutoPlay
etc.....
