Problem with CD Player in Win98SE

When I have a music CD in the drive and attempt to use the CD Player, the system locks up (hard). It goes to scan the disk (I've tried several different CD's) and stops there. It's a generic 52X Multi-Read. Any ideas as to what it could be?
