Problem with CD/DVD drive - can't write CD's

I had a NEC 3540A that stopped writing. I just replaced it with a NEC 3550A and still have the same problem so it is not the drive. Every time that I try to write to a CD, Windows says "Cannot create or replace "***"; access is denied. Check to see if the disk is full or write-protected..." This was the same problem with the 3540 so I replaced it. I have the most current NEC firmware for this drive downloaded from their site.I am wondering if my IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers in device manager are the problem. I have:

1) NVIDIA nForce4 Parallel ATA controller with the primary channel set on "Ultra DMA 2-Ultra 33" with "Let Bios select transfer mode" and
2) NVIDIA nForce4 Serial ATA Controller set on Serial ATA Generation 1-1.5G with all 4 settings below checked.

I think the problem is with the NVIDIA controllers but cannot be sure. I can't remember if these were changed when I began having trouble or if they are the same.

Would really appreciate some assistance. Thanks in advance.

AMD Dual core X2 4400
Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
Evga NVIDIA 6800 GT

Are you using the nVidia IDE drivers? If so, right click on all of your IDE and SATA controllers in the Device Manager, choose "Uninstall" for each, and reboot. Windows should then install the default drivers, which are a little slower but don't have the compatibility or data corruption problems.

Pkrush,
I have already rolled back my drivers and that did not help. Can you suggest some up to date drivers that I could install that might work for this problem?
Thanks

Well, I unistalled both controllers and am now running stock Microsoft drivers with the same problem. Still cannot write.
More suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Maybe you have a bad batch of CDs? I assume your user account on the computer is a computer administrator's, not a limited account.

SparkyJJO,
I have tried several different CD's and yes, my account is administrator. Now I just had a funny thing. I was able to write a small file to a new CD using Nero. Then when I went to write to that same CD again, it said the CD is not writeable and to put in a writeable CD. When trying to use Windows it said the CD cannot be accessed.
But I can play music CD's. I know the drive is good but cannot figure out whay it will not write. Any more ideas?
Thanks

how many CD burning programs do you have installed? I've heard that multiple ones can conflict with each other causing nothing to work right period. I only have Nero installed.

Only Nero; nothing else. The funny thing is that this problem just started a few weeks ago. Thanks for looking at it anyway.

*scratches head*

did you install any software recently? Also you could try system restore and go back to the point before it messed up. I did that once to fix some glitch I had (don't remember what) and it fixed it. Never had the issue after that again either.

Well, if you CAN burn 1 small file, that eliminates a lot of possibilities
Are you trying to burn Copy Protected stuff???
If you are unknowingly using packet wriring mode that formats a disk (or someone who has already formatted them) then thats your prob (drag and drop or backup - InCD)
http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq04.html#S4-51
http://forums.support.roxio.com/lofiversion/index.php/t1794.html

Note that ALL IDE in Dev Man should show MS - Prim/sec/busmaster (driver tab)

In Nero, I guess you know you have to put that burner in dialogue window if you have more than one and you have to check MULTISESSION box to write additional info, which will grey out finalize option in burn tab.

Which exact Nero do you have?
Dunno if you are aware Nero 7.X.X.X has been one long mess up to and including current 7.2.0.3b
Um, we are talking about CDR blanks right?

Could also be permissions/security on folder that contains data you want to burn on.

You could also use event viewer to see if prob. shows.
SiSoftSandra could also pinpoint probs, and tell what DMA you are running.

At the very least for a test, you have to set as master by itself on IDE channel

and........
you could try a filter clean:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetControlClass{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Highlight the CDRom Drive Key(s) delete the Values UpperFilters and/or LowerFilters

Open Device Manager (Winkey-Break or start/run type 'sysdm.cpl / Hardware Tab)

Remove the entry for the cd dvd device(s) then restart.

Bozo Galora, Thanks for your input. I printed out the info for future reference should I need it. Anyway I was only burning backup data from my computer. What I did is uninstall Nero 6.6 and that seemed to fix my problem so far. I no longer get the Windows "access denied" and have been able to use Windows CD burner. I guess my Nero must have become damaged from some reg cleaning or something else. I have not re-installed it yet.
Thanks to all that gave me assistance
