Problem with CD/DVD Burner

I'm actually considering reformatting because this problem is vexing me so badly. been working on it for the past few days and still haven't found a solution.

for some reason, my burner refuses to burn -- it reads and plays both CD's and DVD's without a problem, but any attempts I make to burn something to disk fail horribly, whether I'm using a cd or dvd. it doesn't actually begin the burning process, but fails right after I click the button to start it (same results with multiple programs... I'll post the error messages when I get home, but google searches haven't revealed anything useful).

anyone have any experience with this? the firmware is up to date, as are the drivers.

It would behoove you to post more specs, i.e. Burninating make/model, HD specs, is it on the same IDE channel as the HD (Is it even IDE HD?), have you tried with different blanks, etc....

Which port on the computer is it hooked up to? If it is hooked up to an IDE port on the mobo, are you running the stock MS IDE drivers, or special chipset (Via, NVidia, Intel, etc) chipset-specific IDE drivers? I find that the various chipset-specific drivers can interfere with proper operation of your CD/DVD drives, especially when used to burn.

The other possibility is software, what application are you using to burn, perhaps that drive is so new that the program doesn't properly support it yet. A friend of mine had that problem with DVDXCopy and an NEC DVD drive.

If nothing else, try un-installing the CD/DVD drive in Device Manager, reboot, and let the system re-install it. It can sometimes clean up registry entries for the CD drives that might have been messed up by installing certain burning software or upgrading IDE drivers. Adaptec/Roxio burning software is famous for this.

I encounter several DVD-Writers that have weird problem. I had an NEC 2500A once who can read CD and write to CD and DVD just fine, but it won't read any DVD. I returned it and got another one, and it has worked well since. I also have a Sony DRU 530A who can't read any or write to cd-r, but it will write to DVD. So I think your problem might be the drive itself.
