Problem with card- Warranty issue- Advice requested

Hi,

My system is as follows:

M/B: Asus A8V-E Deluxe
CPU: Athlon64 3500+
RAM: 1GB (2 x 512MB)
Video: Gigabyte 6600GT PCIx
Power: 400W (good quality, don't remember brand)

I have had problems from day 1.
Only beta drivers seem to work, i.e.

Using Giga-byte drivers and nVidia's latest release (not beta)
Half-Life 2: will freeze/hang the computer within 5 minutes
Thief: Deadly Shadows- freezes within minutes
3DMark05: freezes and images are made up of large jagged blocks

Using Beta drivers: 71.25
Can run through benchmarks and does not hang in Half-Life 2.
however, teh water is coloured yellow.

I have updated motherboard drivers (Hyperion 4-in1- 4.55 drivers), as well as sound drivers (on-board sound).

Should the system behave like this? That is, only able to use beta drivers?
or is this a warranty job?

Thanks in advance,

DDDD

How do you know its your graphics card and its drivers that are causing the problem? It could be almost any part in the computer, or any set of drivers. If you have another card pull the 6600gt and try something else.

well, i do not know for sure.
BUT:
why would BETA drivers work and not the released drivers, if it is somethign other than the card? I am not sure.

I forgot to mention that the Omega drivers 1.6177 (fairly old) also allow the 3DMark to run, allbeit slowly. The game HL2 was very bright, though, and i did not get to test whether it crashed.

Also, the system functions in all other aspects perfectly. All Windows apps work (office, other downloaded apps, etc.), only 3D games present a problem.

The difficulty is getting another PCIx card to test.
I have had difficulty getting an old PCI MX440 running. Windows just won't use the PCI card, always choosing the 6600GT. If the 6600GT is removed then the MX440 powers up in POST but windows then shuts it down...

Thanks again..
Adrian

Test with memtest86 and prime95. Your system may not be as stable as you think.

If you pass those, then I would start looking at the video card/drivers/etc.
