This thing is really string to piss me off now. My cable Internet has gone out about 20 times since I have been home and that was around 5PM, it's now 10:30PM. It has been doing this on and off for the past 3 weeks too. I am tempted to call Insight (cable ISP) to have them look at the line outside. My friend had the same problem awhile back and there was water in a connection outside. On the other hand I do not want to have come out only to find nothing wrong with the line and be charged a service fee for the trip out. The reason I say this is that I kind of suspect that the modem might be the problem but I was working fine before it was moved around (about the same time the problems started). Does anyone know if it is likely the cable line outside or is the modem dieing. It is a RCA modem (DCM235) and it has been worked hard over the past 3 years :).

I am not familiar with Insight as an ISP, but typically there should not be a service fee when you are experiencing problems with your paid service. You state that your probems started when you moved the modem around. I would rule out a faulty/failing modem before anything else. Play swap-jockey and test out your connection with a new modem. If it solves the issue, great. If not, take the modem back, and know that you have ruled that piece of the puzzle out.

Double check your cables. If the coax cable is not screwed in all the way, it might be causing the problems.

You might as well try and call for service. They might have some remote diags they can throw at the modem to see if where the problem is comming from.
