Problem with boot on Compaq 7360 - HELP!!!

I have never seen this before. My friend really messed up his puter. First mistake was buying a Compaq and not letting me build him one. Anyways, the computer starts to boot, you see the Compaq screen (hate that, wish I could turn it off) then it looks like it is gonna boot, but just has a black screen with this on the top of the screen:

The asterik actually looks like a spade on the screen. I have tried different boot orders, nothing helps. Anyone have any idea where to start on this thing.

Some suggestions...
1. See if you can to into the bios and use the default settings.
2. Boot from floppy to rule out HD problem.
3. Do you hear a beep? Look up the beepcode from the BIOS manufacturer.

The long way is to open up the PC and take it apart.
