Problem with ATI Control Panel (have a Radeon 9700 Pro)

I was running beta drivers so I could play NBA Live 2003 and NFS Hot Pursuit 2...saw there were some newer Catalyst 2.4 drivers so I went to install them last night. During the installation, when I went to uninstall the old control panel, Windows 2000 rebooted instantly. I never could get the Control Panel uninstalled. I went through all the other steps I could think of to remove the old drivers but I think some of the old Control Panel is still in there...or something.

Anyway, new drivers work okay but in the new Control Panel, when I click on the Options or Smartgart tabs, my machine reboots instantly just like above. Which I wouldn't even care about except...this just isn't right eh? And I want to disable the ATI icon in my taskbar tray. The other tabs all work okay.

did you try reinstalling the original control panel then uninstalling it?

for the drivers did you try rolling back the driver to the old driver

you can also try this in safe mode after boot initial screen hit f8 to choose safe mode

In the beta drivers the control panel and drivers are one big 16 meg file, so no I didn't try just reinstalling the control panel.
I guess I can try this all again....I hate stuff like this because it ends up being a vicious circle of frustration. The beta drivers
probably weren't a good idea to use but damn part of the reason I bought the card was to play games like NFS HP2 in all their
glory.

Got it working now...thanks for your help. I think I just did not have enough of the old stuff removed. It's pretty sucky
having your machine reboot just by trying to click on the options tab. Whew.

By the way, the ones I (upgraded?) from are the ones your link shows, the 6193. Aren't the 6200 drivers on the rage3d site newer?
The file date looks newer.
I'm running the 6200# ones now. They do run NBA Live 2003 and NFS HP2 just fine. And I appear to have slightly faster framerates
with the 6200 drivers, in NFS HP2. This isn't scientific, but it looks like the game is even smoother now...unless my mind is playing
tricks on me it definitely appears to be so.

no you are right

they are newer and help some games perform better but i like the 6193 for other games

oh and the 6200 help a lot in ut2003 for me at least

but i am trying directx 9 and drone z with the 6193 is awesome, much faster and prettier now

Cool...I hadn't tried UT2003 with the new drivers yet...bonus. Is the DX9 safe to use? I thought about that and then was afraid to try it.

I would suggest getting the 6228's... The RC0 beta drivers. They have fixed pretty much well all of my problems that I had with my 9700..

I'm getting my 9700 Pro tomorrow. You mean I can't just pop it in, load the drivers and play my latest favorite game NFS:HP2??

That blows! I have a GF 2 now and I'm running XP Pro. Can anyone explain how to effectively remove all traces of the nVidia drivers before I install the 9700 Pro and drivers.

And these ATI DX9 beta drivers...are they stable? I guess I'll have to load the MS DX9 beta software as well eh?
