Strange problem with my asus a7v333. It keeps shutting down after 1 or minutes with my athlon xp1800. I have changed all the other parts (uses duron 1 ghz once and everything works ok). Used another a7v333 and another xp, the same again. The shut down usually happens when i am in the bios or when installing xp just before the screen to press f8 to agree with the terms appears.

Hmm, so you have tried two boards and CPUs... you're sure you've got the heatsink on the right direction (stepped end of base over the cam end of the socket)? What are you using for thermal-interface material? If you're using the stock "meltable" thermal pad, you may have to take it all off and use some high-quality thermal grease, because the meltable thermal pads are not reusable. Some people also forget to take the plastic protective tab off the thermal pad, which would cause the CPU to overheat.

Also, what brand and model of power supply do you have? What other parts were common to both of your tests?

I have changed 2 psu's, one of these was a sinotech 375w. I will try to change the heatsink/fan and thermal paste. This problem is becoming a nightmare!!

I had the same problem with exactly the same equipment. I was going crazy for about 2 hours until I realised that I had the heat sink on the wrong way around, because of this the thermal pad was only touching 1/3 of the cpu core and the temperature was skyrocketing to over 60C in seconds causing C.O.P. to shutdown the PC. Readjusted heatsink and everything OK.
