Problem with an Asus P3V4X

Got a nice problem today. Could someone help me please?

The config :
Asus P3V4X
P3-600EB
128Mb PC133
Guillemot Geforce SDR
SB Live!
DLink PCI 10/100
Maxtor 20GB 7200rpm UDMA/66
Philips CD Drive

I have 2 identical configs, one works very well and i'm writing on it right now.

The objective is to get a good win9x install on the second config.

Some results :
- Win98 installation : after the first boot, crashs on the "Introduction to

Windows" screen (mstask.exe GPF if I recall correctly)
- Win98SE or WinMe : all seems to work fine except that any Installshield

installation get an error : "dir\SETUP.INS file has become corrupted. Unable to

load installation instructions" so I cannot really say that's fine ...

After the installation of the 4.24 4in1 VIA package, same error ...

So hardware problem no ?

I tried to unplug all unnecessary cards (sblive & network), changing the RAM, the

video card for a S3 Virge, and even the CD-Rom drive ... formating the HD,

reinstalling one of the OSes ... same problem again
Ok ok ... so I tried with another HD (IBM 14.4) ... same problem !! UGHHH

Tried on the other machine (mine) with the HD of the other ... same problem !!!!

So the magical question is : "Is there a problem installing a Win9x OS on an Asus

P3V4X ?????"

Thanks for any advice, I can't find myself any solution now.

Are you trying to do the install with all the cards plugged in? Try it with just the video card then add one card at a time after windows is installed.
If you still get protection errors or gpfs of some kind during install, you can boot with cdrom support, then move to the tools | oldmsdos directory on the windows disk and use xcopy to xcopy all of the win98 directory to a directory you can make on say...the D:\ partition called D:\win98.Like this:without the quotes"":
"e:\win98\tools\oldmsdos xcopy e:\win98\*.* d:\win98\*.* /s /v"
The /s and /v are for copying subdirectories and to verify the xcopy.
Then boot to a command prompt and do the install from the d drive win98 directory.
If you still have problems, you can boot to command prompt safe mode w( this is a command prompt without smartdrive, it will be much slower, but should do the install with no errors.
Thta method has always worked when I had a stubbron combonation that wouldn't install windows. ;)

Thanks for your advice

while trying this I get another error, you know that BIOS text mode error "ATTENTION: A serious disk error has occurred while writing to drive A. Retry (r)?"

Waow ! This occured at 2% of the file copying ... And I didn't boot on the drive A !!!!!!!

I will try with another HD, but I have serious doubts ...

Ok, I've successed to install WinMe on another HD without smartdrive installed (installation from HD, windows "install.exe /c")

the same installshield corruption error again ...

Sounds like you have 2 problems. One the other HD is probably bad. Two are using a burned copy of Win98. I started getting that error with a burned disk that had worked fine for months then bang I just started getting the setup.ins error after a few more trys I started to get more errors. Burned a fresh copy and no problems. If your not using a burned copy maybe your copy has seen its last days.
