Problem with a MaC

Hello,

my friend runs a G4 system that is having severe issues. his hard drive crashed and said that he was locked out of the system. so he reformatted but everytime he tries to re-installl using the boot-disks nothing happens. He's tried 8.5, osx 9.0, 10.0..nothing.

When he puts in nortan utilities the main *screen* pops up but he can't eject the utilities disk or load up any software or do anything.

I have 0 experience with troubleshooting mac's so if anyone can help that would be great (note: all i have mentioned was what he said).

Thank u !

Sounds like his HDD might be pooched, or at least the partition table corrupt. See if he can wipe and rebuild it.

Yeah, it does sound like the HDD might have gone south. Also, Norton utilities for Macs is bad. It's more likely to screw something up than to fix anything. Disk Warrior is a very good utility for Macs. If he has any thir party cards in there pull them out. We had a Mac at work that refused to get past boot-up and it was a bum, not in use SCSI card causing the problems.

You can also direct your friend (or post for him) over here, Macrumors.com. Great forums and a great community.

thanks for the replies.

The nearest apple store is 45 minutes away so I dont think he'll want to take it that far. I'll tell him to remove the third party cards (shouldn't be any at all) and to get DiskWarrior (is it free??).

I also believe the hard-drive is kaput and he needs a new one but I'm not 100% sure of that just yet.

Thank u everyone
