Problem with 64bit xp and ideapad Y550

I was attempting to create an additional partition from an existing partition that had vista 64. I managed to install xp 64, but it required me to make one adjustment in the BIOs, changing HDD control from AHCI to IDE. Otherwise the 0x000000b7 error results. Once I finished the install however, I became unable to access external drives, so I was unable to continue with next step to have a dualboot system. I got in a bind because xp bootloader replaced vista bootloader, and could not do anything with xp.

I then deleted the partition, but could not return to vista. So instead, I just tried a complete reformat of the entire HDD. Again, I could only get xp64 to work with IDE, but this time I managed to get detection of external HDD.

The problem I am having now is
1. getting the correct storage controller so I can use AHCI. I don't quite understand this controller bit. Never came across it.

2. Getting the drivers to work.

For some reason, when I try to install the driver it either doesn't recognize the OS as 64bit (as with the audio driver), or it just doesnt recognize the OS as XP (as with the video driver). I also cannot get the WLAN or LAN drivers to work, and I was pretty sure I had the correct one. I had a set of drivers for vista64 only, so I went to lenovo driver site and got all the xp drivers. I am having trouble getting them to work.

Specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 2.1G
NVIDIA GeForce GT 130M
Gigabit LAN and WLAN- Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN

Sorry for the long post. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you for your time.
