Problem with 1TB Caviar Black

I have 5 SATA hard disks connected to the MB. All are connected to the ICH9. One of these hard drives is a 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black. This drive randomly disappears whenever I go into S3 and come back. It is always fine whenever I reboot or cold boot the machine. Whenever it disappears, I go into S3 again and come back and the drive reappears and Vista 64 starts searching for the drive's contents, etc.

I have tested this drive's SMART attributes and they are all ok. I know this drive comes with the Power-Up In Standby (PUIS) feature but it is not active by default. I also tried swapping the SATA ports, doesn't seem to have helped.

Anyone have an idea of what is going on? Any help is appreciated.

2. Temps of your NB/SB? Is the system oveclocked?

Did you install 5 HDDs at the same time, or is the 5th one (WD Black, I guess) added later? What are your other 4 drives?

My PSU is Corsair 620HX
Temp for NB/SB is 52C/51C respectively. System is OC'd to 3.83GHz

WD Black was installed most recently.

I have a WD Velociraptor, 2x Spinpoint F1 (750/1TB) and 1 500GB 7200.10 Seagate.

Try to 'balance' or 'unbalance' the load of your PSU. In other words, switch the power cables on your PSU to different locations. (Your PSU = modular) A HDD can consume ~20W when it starts.

I sometimes experienced HDD dissapearing when SB is overloaded/overheated, but since your trouble is S3 related it's probably not likely. But for the sake of troubleshooting, can you switch to a different SATA port on your mobo and see what happens? If your vid-card is next to the south bridge, it could heat up the south bridge as well. Of course it is a good idea as well to lower the overclock and see what happens.

And you could also try to change the S3 behavior in Windows. Change PCIe and HDD settings and see if it helps. (Control Panel -> Power Options -> Change Plan Settings -> Change Advanced Power Settings)

I tried, no avail, the problem is, I had 5 drives in here before, I took out an old 7200.9 Seagate drive and replaced it with this, before it never had a problem. Unless the Caviar Black has a substantial power draw increase vs the 7200.9, my power supply shouldn't be the issue.

Hrm, talked to WD Tech supports, seems like they have no solution. Since I am still within the Dell's refund period, I'll probably just return drive and get another Samsung Spinpoint F1 drives, since I've had no problem with those.
