Problem: Win98SE opens Explorer windows upon startup.

It happens every time I start my computer, even if I shut Windows down without any open windows.
I checked the Startup folder, and a couple of registry keys (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run), none had any hint of the stubborn folders.

This problem is getting worse with time, as the number of Windows that open upon startup is gradually increasing.

Thanks for any input,

Prog.

Check in the start menu under programs\accessories\system tools\System Information
Look under software and under startup programs for anything that might be doing that. It will tell you where it is loading from so you can disable it.

do you have multiple user accounts on that machine? maybe someone who used the default account left ie open before shutting down, thus windows remembers that and reopens it on ever restart, just make sure you close it before shutting down :)

Since you said the # is increasing,
do a virus scan.
Can you go ahead and list all the tasks that are running.
(the spelling's important)

1. NAV2000 found no virus on my PC.
2. The windows I am talking about are regular folders- not Internet Explorer windows.

I know that all Win32 versions has some kind of a mechanism that re-opens any existing windows that were present during shutdown. It seems this has now expanded to *recently used* folders (or somthing similar), even if these windows are not open when I restart the computer.

I now get 9 windows after each startup...

try to run msconfig and see what's enabled under startup.
try disabling one item at a time, or uncheck the most suspicious programs that may cause your problem

otherwise, i think it may be a virus of some sort.... time for a classic format c:\? hopefully not :)
