Hey guys,

I just bought a new zalman heat sink fan for my rig. I am running a 3800X2 on a Asus A8n-sli mobo.

I installed the fan booted my comp, everything works, but, the fan makes a very loud mechanical sound. Also, rocking or gently hitting the case makes the sound stop for about 60 seconds. (aka the soviet fix)

The fan does not look wobbly, but I am not sure what to do.

In the manual for the fan it says to turn on the PWM control mode, but the only feature I can find in my BIOS is for the AMD cool & quiet settings which seem to do nothing.

To summarize my incoherent post. Is the fan broken or is there something in the bios that will fix the loud mechanical sound?

Welcome to AT! so many newbs lately, we're gonna need a custom newb avatar soon to keep track of you all. Lock you into an avatar that just says "NEWB" till you make full member, then you can change it, lol.

Anyways, to actually be productive here. you're SOL. sorry. your motherboard does not support PWM or pulse width modulation so when it attempts to undervolt the fan to slow it down the internal circuitry acts as a capacitor and build up then releases bursts of electricity to the fan motor which will either cause a really notable ticking, typically on sleeve bearings or an almost grinding whir sound on ball bearing fans.

You essentially have two options, get a different HSF or get an independent PWM fan controller.

Did you check all of your case fans to make sure the new one you purchased is the one making the noise? I have had a friend of mine with a very similar MOBO the A8n- E and the north bridge fan started making a grinding sound. Good to check out as most of the Zalman fans that I have used are very well behaved, even if your board is going to be running at full speed all the time.
