I'm having several problems with UT running on a Win2K machine.
First, I have a cable modem and a Linksys router and I am having trouble with terrible pings while playing online. The pings to the server in the "find internet games" window are great, about 40 games w/ sub 100ms pings. But when I join one of these games my ping times fluctuate between 90 - 2500+, usually tending toward 900+ for most of the game. My question is, what is causing an initally good ping to result in horrible in-game ping? I'm tending to think it's caused by packet loss but can't find the key in the registry to change the MTU, MSS, etc (current MTU is 1476). In order to eliminate the router's firewall software as a possible choke point, I have placed my machine on an unprotected port on the router but this has not made a difference.
Secondly, my machine has 128 meg of RAM and I have been getting UT game crashes with "ran out of virtual memory" errors. In an attempt to alleviate this, I increased the virtual ram size to 512 meg. Seems to help, no more crashes but lots of pausing in-game to write to disk. Why does it need to be so large with just one program running?
Finally, when exiting the game, the game seems to close normally and I get back to my desktop but the UT music still plays for 8-10 seconds. Then I get a "UT has caused an error and will be terminated, an error log will be generated" message. WTF!? I'm pretty sure I have all the latest video drivers (NVidia 12.x), a recent clean Win2K install, and installed SP1 (which seems to be mostly security patches).
I haven't tried any other games yet (because of the recent OS install) but other typical programs like Office, Netscape, Paintshop Pro, etc. seem to work fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
