So I've been having this problem for a while now and at first I thought it was an OS problem (which I delayed months to reformat because of the time it takes) BUT...finally I reformated and it is still giving me the problem. So its not the OS. I have an XP 2600+ and I have 512 MB of RAM (3200 I think, I can't remember but its 400MHz RAM). Anyhow, I have it set to a FSB of 133MHz because once I set it to 166 it reports the CPU at its full speed and 400MHz FSB. But it is very unstable. It just randomly restarts. If you need any more info please let me know. I'm running XP SP2 and I'm trying to remember these things from memory because I'm not on my machine. Let me know what else you need. TIA!!! Really appreciate it!

Is this a barton? Or a tbred? The barton runs at 166 but the tbred runs at 133. (Most anyway).
Please include what motherboard you are using.

Might help.

Sorry, I thought the title was a little more clear. I was sort of rushing the thread. But its a Shuttle AN35/N-400 (I believe its the N-400. I know its an AN35 and it supports 400MHz FSB) Please let me know if you need any other information. Id really like to figure this out. I also know that it is Kingston RAM PC3200 512MB in one slot. Perhaps it needs to be in a different slot? I know certain RAM has to be in a certain slot sometimes. TIA

Need more information on your chip, perhaps you can tell us the markings on the chip such as:
AXP2600DULTC
BTW, I just pulled that code from my arse so it may not match a real one.

I used the program cpu-z to get this information about my chip. This is based on the current settings in my BIOS.
Name : AMD Athlon XP
Codename : Thoroughbred
Package : Socket A
Specification : AMD Athlon XP 2000+ (this is incorrect though, the chip is a 2600+)
FSB : 133
Bus Speed : 266
Memory Frequency : 133 MHz

HI bam099 and Welcome to the Forums!

For these systems (AMD XP), your performance will be better if you run your cpu & ram insynch. Meaning at the same FSB speed. So, if your CPU s/b run at 166/333, set your ram to the same, instead of 200mhz.

Im really just trying to get the system to run at full speed. If the bus speed is slower or whatever I have to do thats fine. But this reporting my CPU as XP 2000+ is just not a good thing. Especially when I paid that extra money for the 2600! Can anyone think of anything I can try to get the CPU to report as 2600+? Maybe I have settings wrong in the BIOS. Its a Phoenix BIOS btw...maybe that will help. I appreciate all the replies so far! Thanks again and keep em coming!

Bam,

As Fern says, set your FSB and the memory speed both to 166.
This will have the BIOS report the correct CPU speed and the memory will be running at 1:1 (optimal).

OK....I'm going to give that a shot now. the last time I changed the FSB to 166 and thats when the system crashed but perhaps thats because the memory was set different. Thanks for everyones help, I'll let you know how it goes

OK...update:
I changed the settings in the BIOS by entering "expert settings" and the FSB and RAM are now both set to 166. The CPU is now reporting full speed, but it says the memory is running at 333MHz. Is this the proper setting? I thought both would be running at 400 MHz once the settings were optomized. I'm going to use it a little bit and check stability but please let me know if the 333MHz RAM is normal. Thanks again

Yes, those speeds are correct.
With your MB (and all other NF2 boards), you want to keep your FSB and memory at the same speed.
You can, of course, run them out of synch but performace will suffer.
If you really want your memory at PC3200 (200MHz), you can always try overclocking your CPU to 200FSB. ;)

I tried to post last night but I guess it did not go through. My computer was running at the proper speed when set to 166 MHz but the computer crashed multiple times after that. It just randomly reboots, seemingly when I open programs etc which sounds like its either when the CPU gets going or the RAM is being used. I'm not really sure what the problem is but the ONLY way my system can run stably is when it is set to 133 MHz which reports my CPU as an XP 2000+. I'm not really concerned with the FSB speed at this point, I'm more concerned with my processor running at its full speed. Please help with anything else you can think of, I'm willing to try pretty much anything at this point. Thanks again. Let me know if additional info is needed.

1) post a list of all the parts in your system by brand & model, including the brand and model of the power supply unit that makes it all run (or not run)

2) raise the memory voltage to 2.7 volts in the motherboard's BIOS

3) ensure that your ATX12V cable is plugged into the motherboard
