Problem w/onboard Highpoint controller. PLZ HELP!!

I have an Abit KR7A mobo and the onboard HPT372 controller has given me nothing but problems. Disk transfer performance is OK, but most games and applications take several minutes to load and games run very slowly. I've found that if I actually disable the HPT372, the load problems go away and everything runs smoothly! But then my transfer performance goes in the toilet. The apps affected most are UT, Dungeon Seige, 3D Studio, and Bryce. UT, in particular, is abominably slow with the Highpoint. Sometimes, after about 5 minutes of loading, it will simply crash. I've reinstalled the programs with the same effect.

This is the second Abit mobo I've had and the last one (BE6) also had the same problem with the Highpoint controller. I know its not my HD since I've used a couple of different drives and they all exhibited the same problem. I find that if I disable sound, it helps some. I've used a couple of different sound cards with the same result so I know its not that (although they were both SoundBlaster cards).

Has anybody else had this problem? Any suggestions would be appreciated. My setup is described below.
