Hi. I just built a new system. The specs are in my sig. I'm having an erratic problem with my network card and the cable modem. After a few hours of being online, I get disconnected and can't access the internet in any way without rebooting my computer. My other system has no problem. I just have a simple TCP/IP connection. My hub shows all the leds lit correctly. I've pulled out the card and reinstalled it into different slots. Nothing seems to work. Sometimes it happens within 15-20 minutes of being online. Any ideas? I'll try to find a different network card to test tomorrow.

thanks,
collin

How is your network setup? Are you sharing internet connection between the 2 machines?

The network is setup so that the cable modem is in the uplink port, and the two machines are each on separate ports. This is my fourth machine setup this way. The other two I got rid of. They all worked fine except for the new one. My brother runs the exact same Linksys card on his Win2k machine, and I have two friends who also run the same card on their Win2k machines. They all have no problems whatsoever. I'm thinking about doing a fresh install this weekend, but I have doubts as to whether that will fix anything.

I've heard that sometimes if the wrong component sleeps, you can loose it; perhaps even from sharing an irq.

You need a router with built-in or stand-alone hub/switch to share the cable modem. If you have only 2 machines you can use ICS but you'll need 2 NICs in the main PC: one connected to the cable modem and the other to the second PC.

I've been reading on the Win2k networking newsgroup that it's a bug that some cable modem ISPs are having with Win2k. Why would I need a router? This setup is totally legit and is common among a lot of internet sharers. It's worked perfect for the past couple of years. I have found out that it's due to some different programming within Win2K.
