AMD 750 T-bird
Voodoo 5500 AGP - latest drivers
Diamond 10 BaseT network/phoneline network card - latest drivers
Diamond MX400 sound card - latest drivers
ATA66 7200 rpm 20 gig Western Digital HD
Kenwood 62x true-x CD-ROM
Plextor 8x4x32A burner

kenwood is slave, plexy master (secondary ide)
WD HD is on pri ide alone

win98 SE, no updates (no access to internet at home, will in one week when i go back to school)

adaptec, plex manager w/ update, direct CD
firmware 1.09 on plexy

PROBLEM:

my kenwood shows up on bootup, in system properties (no conflicts) and as drive E: in "My Computer" and "explorer", however, it cannot read any disc i put in the drive.

edit:

the kenwood spins up, but nothing else happens.

It was working before i reformatted 2 days ago.

before i reformatted, I had all the updates for win98 se installed.

I had tried to install Win98 SE using the kenwood (b/c of it's faster speed) after the format, but it wouldn't read the Win98 SE CD.

I haven't installed the 4n1 drivers form VIA yet, because I don't have access to the net from home, will next week when i go back to school.

thanks for your help.

I've got a Kenwood 72 true x. I've tried to download VIA's 4-in-1 drivers, 4.28, I think, and when I load the IDE Busmaster controllers, the CD-ROM doesn't work. I don't know what chipset you have, I can't remember off-hand what your mobo has, but if its VIA, my guess is that that's the problem.

Unfortunatly, there is no help for you. People who buy Kenwood True-X drives are in for bumpy roads. The drives are problematic & breakable @ best.
