problem w/ cd drives on win xp

hi all
i recently installed win xp and since i've been having trouble with both cd drives. the cd-drives are a dvd NEC 5700A and a cd-rw LG CED-8080B. the drives don't seem to be able to recognize audio cd's. when i put them in winamp pops up but doesnt load the cd. then when i try to play the cd from either drive (d: or e🙂. winamp says [connecting] cda://D,# (depending on track number) then [unknown host] cda://D,# and won't play anything. windows media player just won't recognize the audio cd in any drives. also i use CDex to burn mp3s off cd's and that goes OK but before when you take a cd out and put a different one back in using CDex it would recognize the change. however now i have to restart the program each time to get it to recognize the new cd.

thanks in advance

I too have once had probs where when i popped a CD in any of my drives it would try to read the contents, and just keep trying to read, never listing the disks contents as if i had bad media.
I eventually found the cure was to go into Device manager, uninstall all the CDR/CDRW drives, then click the Scan for Hardware changes button and let XP reinstall them. Everything worked fine after that.
Im wondering if it may have been me installing ASPI drivers that mucked XP in some way?
The ASPI drivers are still there and working, but i no longer have any probs? hmmm?
May be worth you trying the above?

rockhard =)

i tried what you suggested rockhard, and now windows media player seems to be able to recognize it but winamp still has the same problem

oh well atleast one works 🙂 thanks

Glad to hear you managed to partially fix the prob 🙂
Maybe a reinstall of Winamp might fully resolve the prob?
Just curious - did you try to install any ASPI drivers for any of your burning software, or did any of your burning software install its own ASPI layer prior to the problem?
Im coming to the conclusion it was the installation of the ASPI layer that isnt really intended for XP that was the culprit in my prob.

dunno about ASPI but i did install Roxio Direct CD 4 which upon installation gave me a warning that there were compatability issues with Direct CD and windows xp. i installed anyway and i guess that might've installed ASPI drivers

Ugh - I have never had total satisfaction using Roxio (Adaptec) software in the past, so may i recommend you uninstall this proggy in the hope it may resolve your Winamp not working if all else fails?
I think there is a similar utility available from Roxio under the "WinONCD" label called "INCD" IIRC that is certified compatible with XP?
I have not used it myself, but maybe worth you looking at if you really need an on the fly CDRW writing plug-in for Explorer.
Myself i just use the built into XP's own CDRW writing plugin. Never had probs with it, though as you probably know its not as quick as the plug-in you use 🙁
Do let us know if removing the DirectCD plug-in/software solves your prob, then i and others can take note of your found solution to the prob.

Cheers,

rockhard =)

Just remember if all else fails theres.........

always the boot off the CD, install - choose repair at examining disks part of install to repair your OS 🙂
always a sure fire last ditch attemp in my armoury 😀
Has got me out of some sticky ones if all else fails 🙂

How did your uninstall/reinstall of Winamp fair?
