Just out of curious nature, how many defective video cards have you seen? And do you notice any particular pattern with them? I have literally bought dozens upon dozens from newegg.com for various customers as well as myself, and have finally bought one that was legitimately dead, not long after buying one that was damaged.
Card one :
256MB Evga VIVO 7800GT PCI-E
From Newegg, 'Recertified', $129
Problem : When opened shipping box and examined product, the corner capacitor had been knocked off and was bouncing around inside the plastic clamshell.
Resoultion : Took to a friend who specializes in tricky soldering work, he resoldered the cap, and things have worked perfectly ever since.
Analysis : Shipping is hard on fragile products these days. A less-heavy card would likely endure less stress than heavy ones, due to laws of physics.
Card two :
256MB HIS Radeon X1650Pro AGP
From Newegg, New, $109
Problem : When running windows for more than a few minutes, vertical lines begin to appear on the screen. After a varying amount of time, regardless of cooling applied (extra 120mm Delta 2 inches away from the perfectly operating onboard fan), the system will totally freeze. Launch any 3d app, and near-instant lockup, sometimes totally black, sometimes frozen artifacts, sometimes dancing artifacts, but always unresponsive to all input. Problem duplicated on multiple systems that are rock-solid with other video cards, including 6800GT, X800XT, 9800Pro, 5950, etc.
Resolution : Indeterminate as yet. Received RMA# from Newegg, will ship tomorrow morning.
Analysis : Incomplete. Disappointing to receive a defective NEW product. First experience in a long time with ATI-based product. First experience with HIS brand name. Poor experience so far.
In closing, is it just a lottery strike to come across a bad card? Or is there more to it than that?
