Problem using security software with VISTA 64

I have a 2-3 Month old PC. I really have not had problems with adware, spyware, virsus etc but decided that I wanted to get some type of internet security.

I first tried Norton 360. For some reason I was unable to install Norton 360. Working with Noron representative they said something may have been corrupted so I tried following some of their suggestions but I gave up on trying to install Norton 360. I completely removed Norton with Norton Removal Tool they provide. This tool did not completely remove Norton... Checking "Add Remove Programs", it left a software so I uninstalled.

Next I went to Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0. Intially it was good until I experienced slow downs with IE & Windows Explorer showing "Not Responding". I contacted K representatives and eventually uninstalled & re-installed K. All was good for about 3 days. Not sure if this was the culprit but I was playing a game when game froze and I restarted PC.... Ever since I'm again getting "Not Responding" on IE & windows explorer. Since I use more IE and open Windows explorer I mention these but other programs also experience slow downs. Programs eventually come back from "Not Responding" but take a while. Usually when I get these "Not Responding", I can hear my PC making a repeating sound (annoying sound I may add)... From this repeating lound sound I can tell my PC is getting stuck.

When I shut down Kaspersky my PC is fine... I'm trying to work with K representatives but I'm again getting tired and considering the next internet security.... Although I can uninstall/install again... I fear that If I do this I could go in a circle and get "Not Responding" again.

Has anyone experienced these type of problems ?

I really want to avoid going to the next software.. Most likely McAfee is next on my list... but If I can't resolve... then I have no choice.

According to K, they have escalated my problem to another support group.... Any suggestions would be great.

Update:

I decided to uninstall Kaspersky. I was looking into Avira but didn't like the false positives results from some reviews... so I decided to re-try installing Norton 360. This time I was able to install it fine with no issues.

I no longer get any "Not Responding" messages and I also don't get annoying noise (repeating noise..) coming from the PC that I used to get from Kaspersky. I think it has to do with some compability issues... not sure I'm just glad of not getting any issues...

I have seen many people complain about Norton being a resource hog... After using Norton 360 for a couple of days, I have not noticed this to be the case.

I do have a question regarding Windows Firewall, according to symantec they suggest disabling Windows Firewall. I currently have Windows Firewall & Norton 360 Firewall running at the same time. I don't have any issues... so I don't know whether I should continue running Windows Firewall or disabling it as Symantec recommends...

Any recomendations ?

Only use one firewall at a time.

OK, Thanks. I have disabled my Windows firewall and will only use Norton's firewall.

BTW, I usually run scans overnight but decided to try running a scan while using PC to see if there was any noticable differences. When Norton 360 is performing scans, I did not see any increases in CPU or memory at all.... but when attempting to run programs, I did notice a noticeable slowness in opening applications like games and other programs. For example a particular game usually takes about 16seconds to open... but while running a scan, it took about 90 seconds... the same goes opening any other programs.

I was really surprised and confused since I did not see any spike in my CPU or Memory. Like I said, although I run scans overnight... I don't really mind... but wanted to see if this was normal or not...

Thanks for your suggestions.
