Problem using recovery cds for Thinkpad X30

I formatted my hd and let it install the recovery program to the hidden 1.3 gig partition on the HD but it then keeps rebooting during the part where it starts copying the os drivers etc and then comes up and says there were some errors during the recovery process. the hd is formatted NTFS does it have to be fat32 for the recovery cd to work right? I bought these x30 recovery cds off ebay because I had lost my originals. it gets to like 3 or 4% and then reboots. I see an error message or some working on the dark dos screen that shows briefly but cant see it long enough to read what it says
