hi

I just bought a new dell dimension 520 which has a single 160 gb sata drive, I used to have no problem using dos tools from boot cd's on my old pc which had a single IDE hard drive but now I get all sorts of problems and none of the dos tools will work for me, I am completely dumbfounded as to WHY this is happening, and just hope that somebody has an idea how I can get my dos tools working on this new PC ??

You may need to get new or different DOS tools that can deal with SATA. Do a Google for DOS Tools and SATA and you will come up with what is generally available.

More likely the problem is that the drive in the Dell is partitioned as NTFS volumes and normal DOS can't deal with NTFS. Download the .ISO file and burn a copy of the Ultimate Boot CD for DOS - it can deal with NTFS volumes. It has many of the useful DOS utilities on it. There is also an Ultimate Boot CD for Win which boots into a mini version of Windows and runs both Win and some DOS utilities. Some things can be done with that that can't be done from DOS.

NTFS, and partition size could be an issue since >120GB requires LBA48 addressing.

Ultimate Boot CD (free), Acronis Partition Expert (costs money).
