Problem: USB with VP6

I have a dual p3 700 with an abit vp6 motherboard. My problem is that whenever I attach anything to the USB port (be it mouse or modem), my computer crashes after a while. This happens in both win98se, win2k (fresh install, sp1, sp2, with and without new via 4in1!). I have a 10gig fujitsu U2W on a Adaptec 2940U2W in slot 2, which I boot off. And I also have Radeon Vivo 64mb.
Does any of you have any clues?

the usb shares an irq with two of the pci slots, you could try moving things around
