Problem upgrading to HT CPU with windows 2000 ?

Hello,

I have just ordered myself a P4 3.06G with HT to replace my present ageing non HT 2.5G processor. I can confirm that my motherboard does support HT processors in Bios (ABIT be-7)

My question & concern is will i just be able to swap CPU's & switch PC on to find W2K OS boot as normal & show 2 CPUS in TASK Manager -or will i get a CRASH ?!

-If it will crash - Is there anyway to avoid getting a crash without having to reinstall OS ? HAL upgrade ?

-Am i better off to leave HT off in BIOS altogther as i hear it is pretty much useless in Windows 2000 ?

-Once enabled in BIOS & booted successfully into W2K OS will i be able disable HT later on without getting OS crash as OS will be expecting 2 CPUs ??

I know Windows 2000 is not supposed to be too compatiable or great with HT but i really really HATE XP.. & will therefore stick to W2K as long as i can.

Please share any advice or experiences you have.

Thanks

I don't think win2k will run correctly with hyperthreading, so I would recomend turning it off in the bios if it doesn't boot up properly.I believe the issue with win2k and hyperthreading is that win2k won't recognize HT correctly, and will try to run the CPU as though it was actualy 2 physical CPU's.
