I recently bought an Asus A7V333 w/ Athlon XP 1700+ and 512 MB DDR333 2700 RAM, and set it all up with my old video card, etc. When I power it up, I get life, but nothing comes on-screen and a cycle of beeps comes on, signaling that it didn't sense any memory. Could this be a problem with CPU (I am able to open/close drives, and I see life in my keyboard, etc.), or is it the memory? The reason I ask is that I would at least expect to see something on-screen, although I'd imagine it tells you of memory failure with beeps for a reason. What would my computer do if my CPU wasn't installed correctly or was not working?

Welcome to AnandTech, NYHustonman.

Let me ask you a couple of questions: DDR ram can sometimes be a little difficult to install correctly--the common consensus is that it takes alot more pressure to seat it properly. Have you tried making sure that it's seated fully? Do you have another stick you can swap out to see if your new ram is ok? You could try putting the ram into one of the other slots which will tell you if your first ram slot is having issues. If you leave the ram out then boot, do the beep codes change?

This is from the Asus website, I'm going to try to do it tomorrow:

"2. When installing registered DDR SDRAM on A7V266, I will hear the endless long beeps. Can A7V266 support registered DDR SDRAM?

A7V266 requires BIOS version 1002c or later to support registered DDR SDRAM. Hence, please use un-buffered DDR SDRAM to boot up system and flash bios to version 1002c or later before installing registered DDR SDRAM.

The A7V266 BIOS ver.1002c can be downloaded from the following web page.
ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/asus/mb/socka/kt266/a7v266/a1010.zip"

I had them inserted fully (trust me, I do, felt like I would crack the motherboard...I'm desperate). I'm going to swap out tomorrow. Tried all 3 slots. The beeps don't change.

Big question: So, it's not a CPU problem?
