I downloaded firmware upgrade 1.07 from TDK's site and tried to flash the drive but the software locked up. It did this several times so I gave up. I then downloaded firmware 1.05 from TDK's site and it worked flawlessly.

Anyone have any ideas why firmware 1.07 won't work? Am I missing something? Is there another site to get the firmware from?

Edit:

I tried again, no go. It seems that it unpacks the program and then the unpacking status bar disappears. The mouse cursor changes to hourglass and then goes back to the pointer, but nothing else happens. A fer minutes later Windows explorer locked up on me so I tried to shut down the system and a box appeared stating the firmware update wa busy. I had to end the task to get the machine to shut down.

If it helps this is a brand new system that I just assembled last night. The components are as follows:

1 Ghz T-bird
MSI K7T Pro 2A
2 128M Crucial PC133 CAS 2 RAM
Maxtor 45 Gig ata 100 7200 rpm drive
Maxtor Ultra ATA 100 PCI adapter card
Elsa Gladiac GeForce 2

The TDK 12/10/32 is the master on the on board IDE channel #1
The 36x CD-Rom is the master on the on board IDE channel #2
The Maxtor 45 gig is the master on the ATA 100 card in channel #1

The operating system is Windows 98.

I had this same problem Ronstang, and ended up having to return the drive and get it exchanged. Any other ideas from others on the forum? the EXACT same thing happened to me and I'm curious if any procedures are necessary before upgrading because I've heard of successful 1.07 upgrades.

I upgraded my firmware on my TDK Velocd 12/10/32 to 1.07 with ease. I doubt its a hardware problem on the your drive that wont let you upgrade. What OS do you use?

EDIT: Damnit I didnt read, you use win98. I use win98 also. Why not give TDK tech support a try?

I tried TDK tech, left a message on their website lastnight, and still haven't heard from them. Anybody else have any ideas?

Try to disable the dma on that drive before upgrading. Plextor recomends this and mine worked great doing that. You can enable it again after you do the firmware upgrade. Oh I have a Plextor but they are supposed to be the same, hope this helps.

Ronstang,

I had this problem before. What I did was disconnect the other IDE device I had on the same channel so that my only devices connected were the HDD and the TDK drive. After I did this, I was able to upgrade the firmware (v1.07) without a problem. Good luck.

I konw this is a late reply, but it may help. I have the 12x10x32 and an asus cusl2 mobo. I had to uninstall the intel i815 ata drivers to get the firmware upgrade to work. Then I reinstalled them.

I was having the same exact problem trying to go from 1.05 to 1.07. I don't know why 1.05 would update and 1.07 wouldn't but after reading a bunch of posts here and trying what they said...

Here's what worked in my case:

First I downloaded aspichk.exe and found that my ASPI layer was not up to date.

Then I updated my ASPI files using a hack called ForceACPIv1.7 since I didn't have any Adaptec products installed on my machine (although I do own a sccsi card) (if you have one of their products you can use adaptec's updater instead "aspi32.exe" found on their site).

After running ForceASPI as instructed here, I rebooted and suddenly the firmware upgrade flashed perfectly!! Now I finally have 1.07.

Upon restarting a second time windows informs me that my ASPI is older than the version installed by windows98se and that I can go to setup to fix it. However, since the adaptec aspi's are actually newer versions I chose to ignore this. I have also heard that some burning software requires the newer aspi layer. So we'll see if this causes me problems or helps me later. P.S. I'm not sure if this is an illegal program or what but I think TDK or Microsoft owes us a similar fix.
