Problem updating Visat 64 service pack 2

Been working fine over the past year and a bit and now that SP2 is out decided to update that via the automatic method.

I get a screen saying fail,

c:\windows\system32\riched20.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error. Try installing again or contact sys admin.....

when I get this error box and close it, it does come up again and then I close it second time and everything is fine.

So I downloaded the sp2 file and tried to open from there, same thing.

Googled the file and I know what it is but dont get the connection to my update and cant find solutions online specific to me.

Any clues how to update, repair or reinstall this one system file?

I have no idea how long the problem is there so wouldn't know how far back to roll the machine either.

I really dont want to reinstall the OS as I have lots of data to lose and thats why I didnt upgrade this one to 7, thanks.

Why cant you just backup your data and re-install? I had to do that when i installed service pack 2 as like you i was having some issues i cant remember what it was a while ago now but i remember i could not get it to work without a re-install.

BTW this is why my OS partitions are just big enough for the OS and data partitions are seperate. That way if the OS takes a crap i can just wipe the partition and re-install and all my data is safe.

As I said, I'd rather repair a system file than reinstall the OS, do all the updating and reinstall my programs, I do have 2 hard drives, 2 partitions each with file backup but I'd rather do the easy way than the hard way.
