Hi,
After reading some posts about updating the firmware on Samsung DVD/CDRW combo drives, I downloaded the Samsung auto-updater. It found my drive (SM-348) and said there was an update available (T505, up from T501). I let it run and the updater program appeared to lock up (task manager said it had quit responding). The Samsung flasher program screen said Wait, and I left if for about 30 minutes the first time, with no change. Windows task manager could not close the Samsung flasher most times I tried it. I retried the whole process several times, with similar results. At times when the task manager did close the flash program (after quite a period of time), then when retrying the flasher it could not recognize the drive until I rebooted. I finally gave up.
Then I went into the windows device manager and looked at the drive's properties -- and I found I only had 2 of the original 5 region changes left! I had never changed regions from Region 1 before. I also found that the original region I had used (Region 1) was now unselected.
I put in a Region 1 DVD and it played. I went back and looked at properties and found I now have only one region change left!
It looks like not only did the update program not work, but it also removed 4 of my 5 region changes from the firmware. I'm not sure if there is any way to get those back. I uninstalled the Samsung update software before it did any more damage.
Let us know if any of you find the same problem. I don't know if it is a problem with the Samsung drive or software, or whether it has anything to do the Shuttle SS51G platform the drive is on.
