problem trying to set virtual memory myself with win98se

i tried to choose "let me specify my own virtual memory settings" instead of the default "let windows manage my virtual memory settings" under my computer -> properties -> performance -> virtual memory. restarted the computer as requested as well. but everytime i go back to the virtual memory menu, the "let windows manage.... " would be chosen again! no matter how many times i tried the same thing will happen. seems like windows simply refused to let me specify my own virtual mem.

i read the results from sisoft sandra and it recommended me to assign a fixed amount of virtual memory instead of a flexible amount. it also told me that my current amount of virtual memory is too much. but i just cannot do anything about it!

anyone knows how to solve this? 😕

Just curious, what did you set the virtual mem to? Usually, most people say that you set your virtual mem to your RAM * 2, and make sure you set both min and max to the same value.

Hmm... never had that experience myself. But would pressing "apply" before "ok" be of any help??

I wouldn't rely on Sandra's warnings/tips too much. Notoriously irrelevant.

An example, I get a "Memory bus speed exceeds rated memory speed" warning. Isn't that the object?

It also warns me that an LPT1: port can't be detected as I watch my printer churn out reams.

I would leave the Virtual Memory settings alone, you stand a good chance of limiting performance and/or creating "dead" drive space.

Tharyn: i tried setting it to a minimum of 2*RAM and an unlimited maximum.

MulLa: yup. tried that also.

CraigC: SiSoft Sandra aside, this problem is still weird to me!
