I have one of those Toshiba 1115-s103 Satellite laptops. I pulled out the DVD drive and put in a DVD/CDRW drive from a different Toshiba Satellite.

It is not recognized in My Computer or in the Device Manager. However, when I insert a cd/dvd it spins up, and also when I have a cd/dvd in the drive when it starts. I tried putting in a bootable cd but it didn't boot off the drive.

So what's up?! The drive is a Toshiba SDR2102

Any help would really be appreciated!

Well after further testing this problem is even worse. If I install the drive while the computer is running it will recognize the drive, install it, and it will function just fine. However, if I then reboot the drive is missing again and doesn't show up anywhere.

Help!?

maybe it's actually not meant for you laptop.

For the laptop to be able to boot from that cd drive, it has to have the drivers embedded in the BIOS (or somewhere very early in the booting process). At that point, the OS hasn't load yet so it doesn't have the drivers you installed whne the OS was running.
