Problem: Sporadic printing!

ok, so i have a HP Deskjet 520. it has a large parallel connection to my computer and uses a usb cable that runs though a power converter and to the outlet. should this be so? usb powering the printer? dont most printers have a seperate cable that powers the printer?

anyways, to the problem. every now and then it prints fine, then again, every now and then i get an error message. its a really generic message too, one that says it could be any of the following, then lists all possiblities: no paper etc..

i believe that it could be:

a) in need on a driver update (win 95 computer)

b) theres something wrong with the cable connecting the two.

c) the printer itself is suckin it up.

what do you think?

the wierdest thing is that it is not consistant, i cannot count on it to die at some given point, sometimes it just happens and sometimes it works fine...

any ideas would be MOST appreciated. thanks alot for your time.

Hmm. I believe that Win95 does not officially support USB devices (I know they released an OEM Win95 OSR C or something but still no real USB support). Now your printer doesn't have a power cord? I'm thinking that you are supposed to use the parallel connection or USB connection only and plug in the printer to the wall outlet. That's weird... I've heard of some scanners using USB as power but never a printer.
