Hello,

I'm a 56ker who would really love to get Mandrake 9.0. As you can imagine, it's TERRIBLY long to download! :)

I would like to know if any of you guys could snail mail me some CDRs to help me not get insane over downloading 2.1 GB of data trough a 56k modem! :)

If you are interrested, I would also like to have the latest Red Hat distro and the latest SuSe distro.

Any help will gather big thanks!

Hehehehe.

I live in Quebec, Canada and you can email me at nopressure@ca.tc for more informations.

Thanks a bunch!

Yes Mandrake 9.0 includes KDE3, it is quite nice. I would definently say just to install 9.0, its always a good idea in general to install the latest distribution. Some people may argue with me that it would be better to keep working on it until you figure it out just to get experience, but blah :)

Download all of them ! Then put all the rpms into a new directory call it whatever you want and open up that directory using Konqueror and bring up a console by pressing ctrl-T. Also make sure to rename your ( /home/username/.kde <- it's hidden !! ) .kde directory to .kde-old. Then go to the directory with the rpms and type in the console you just opened up 'chmod 755 *' and then after that type 'rpm -Uvh *.rpm' Once that is done you should log out of KDE and restart X.

Thanks for your help guys!

I'm currently downloading Mandrake 9.0 but I'll get all those KDE 3.0.4 files for it and use NorthenLove tricks to get the latest version on.

It sure will be long though... Downloading all that stuff is kinda slow on a 56k connection... Gotta love GetRight! :)

Thanks again!

You're downloading Mandrake 9.0 over 56K dial-up? If so, any number of us is willing to send you CDRs of some free Linux (or even UNIX) distros. It'll probably arrive by snail mail before the download completes. :p As for upgrading KDE 3.0.x in-place, I suggest the rpm Freshen command instead of Upgrade. In fact, freshen is probably suitable for upgrading a host of software packages, particularly the modular ones that require a bunch of packages.

Is that so manly?

The request is up then! :)

Is anybody willing to burn me the 3 CD-Rs of Mandrake 9.0 and send them by mail to me?

I live in Quebec, Canada.

For more informations, email me at nopressure@ca.tc.

Thanks for any help!

Ok... so I d/l 'ed all the 3.0.5 files from the link above (FAST server BTW).

I did the "rpm -F *.rpm" and it came back with :

error: Failed dependencies:
noatun >= 3.0.4 is needed by kdeaddons-noatun-3.0.5-1

So... I downloaded the 3.0.4 version of the file on the same server and reran the command. This time I got:

warning: package kdeaddons-noatun = 3.0.4-1 was already added, replacing with kd
eaddons-noatun <= 3.0.5-1
error: Failed dependencies:
noatun >= 3.0.4 is needed by kdeaddons-noatun-3.0.5-1

I've had this sort of thing happen before and have no idea what to do about it. The only vesion I can find is a "-1" of the file they want and I can't get it, so it just says "sorry.... "

What to do?

Joe

What version of and distro are you using ? If it's MDK-Linux then there are no rpms for 3.0.5 yet because 3.1.0 is when MDK-Linux will put out the rpms. Also I wouldn't use rpms from other distro's that aren't from MDK-Linux when it comes to upgrading stuff like KDE.

P.S. If it's the correct rpms for your distro then upgrade noatun it's self first and then up try the rest of the packages again.

I have the CDs, and could mail them to you, but unfortunately... I'm living on the other side of this huge big ball we're sitting on ;)
But anyway I'd suggest you to buy Mandrake 9.0. Its great, and Mandrake is in great financial troubles and may go bankrupt soon.

I already thought of that. Alas, I already support a bunch of other non-profitable corporation and am short of funds. That's why I go the "download edition" route.

I'm using RedHat 8 with the 2.4.18-19.8.0 kernel. I picked up all the files from the server you listed above, except that I backed my way up the directories until I got to a directory for RedHat and then followed that back down to the rpm's for 3.0.5 for RH8.

P.S. If it's the correct rpms for your distro then upgrade noatun it's self first and then up try the rest of the packages again.
Ok, tried and got the following:

[joe@Soul kde35]$ rpm -Uvh kdeaddons-noatun-3.0.5-1.i386.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
noatun >= 3.0.4 is needed by kdeaddons-noatun-3.0.5-1

Help? I've gotten this circular stuff before and I never know what to do.

I have found several noatun 3.0.4 rpms. Try installing/upgrading one of them before trying to upgrade something that depends on it.

Point me in a direction. Where do I download them? All the ones I've been able to find are 3.0.4-1 types.

Hmmm..... the Speakeasy (strangly, my ISP!) rpmfind.net only located 1 site
Found 1 sites for kdeaddons-noatun
and only had 7 rpm's, none of which were the 3.0.4.i386 variety.
I have found several noatun 3.0.4 rpms
Would you be so kind as to post a direct link to them?

Thanks,

Joe

ftp://ftp.rpmfind.net/linux/KDE/stable/3.0.4/RedHat/7.3/i386/noatun-3.0.4-0.73.1.i386.rpm

Neither of these say they are for RH8 though...

I want to stop before we go any farther and thank you for your patience. I'm sure that I'm probably doing something stupid that a *nix vetern would breeze by, but I am but an egg.... onward.
ftp://ftp.rpmfind.net/linux/KDE/stable/3.0.4/RedHat/8.0/i386/noatun-3.0.4-1.i386.rpm
ftp://ftp.rpmfind.net/linux/KDE/stable/3.0.4/RedHat/7.3/i386/noatun-3.0.4-0.73.1.i386.rpm
Both of those have 3.0.4-??? after them. I posted earlier that the "3.0.4-???" files don't seem to be accepted, as shown in the following

warning: package kdeaddons-noatun = 3.0.4-1 was already added, replacing with kd
eaddons-noatun <= 3.0.5-1
error: Failed dependencies:
noatun >= 3.0.4 is needed by kdeaddons-noatun-3.0.5-1

Perhaps I am doing something wrong, but it doesn't seem to like the 3.0.4-1 series RPM's that I've found.

I've downloaded the src for kdeaddons and I looked at the readme, but it doesn't tell me how to change it from the generic sort of files into ones for my machine. Any guidance or where I could go for instructions?

Thanks again and as always,

Joe

Ok... looks like I got it.

I went back to the RedHad Packages Utility and uninstalled the kdeaddons-noatun. I then went back to the directory where I had all the KDE 3.0.5 rpm's and did an "rpm -F *.rpm" and it gave me a quick warning about kde....noatun... not having a signature, but other than that, everything seemed to install without a hitch.

I don't seem much difference in the desktop. I guess I'll go ahead and try the 3.1 rc and see how it is.

Thanks for all of the help.

Joe
