1600x1200 for 17" CRT is definately too high. Have you try updating the drivers?

I don't remember if you can do this or not, but can you change the resolution in Windows Safe Mode?? If you can, I'm not sure if it carries over to normal boot.

1600x1200 on the 19" viewsonic PF790 monitor

well after a reboot, it boots into the system and ran 1280x1024, everything seemed to be fine. i'm using it at 1024x768 now.

would system instability contribute to this (19" CRT flickering)? I mean, it's not like it's the first time something like this happened. with this 17" hooked up, the screen will go off and on randomly (overheating?)... i dont know, this is just frustrating.
