During the installation of my linksys router, the wizard told me to make sure i had a direct connection to the internet (obviously i do), but then it checked it when i continued the installation and an error came up saying "The computer is not connected to the internet ! Please check your internet connection." Has this happened to anyone else, or do you know why it isnt detecting my connection? thanks for your help! (this is also posted in the networking board, but i get faster responses here :))

Is the router connected properly to your cable or DSL modem? Are the indicator lights on your cable or DSL modem indicating you have a good signal? If DSL did you select PPOE in the setup (many DSL configurations use PPOE.) Did you enter the proper username/password (for your ISP) during the setup and tell it to save? Is your computer setup to "Obtain an IP address automatically"? If so, did it actually get it's IP from the router? The IP should be 192.16.1.XXX. You can check by running winipcfg at a command prompt for Win9X or ipconfig at a command prompt for NT, 2000, XP. Could you possibly be running a crossover cable from your computer to the router? In general a regular strait through cable is used for this segment.

This is all before ive even connected anything to the router. The first paper that comes with the router in the package says " READ THIS FIRST!!! Before disconnectiong your cable or DSL modem, please insert the enclosed Installation Wizard CD into your PC and follow its step-by-step direction on setting up your Linksys Cable/DSL Router." When i run the Wizard, it says "1. Make sure the internet connection is active" (which it is) then when i click next it checks the connection, then says "The computer is not connected to the internet ! Please check your internet connection." I most definitely have a connection because i am surfing as we speak. any more ideas? thanks for your help

Howdy!

I'd do what the other guy said. It's a very strong possibility that your computer's NIC isn't getting an IP assigned by the router. You can connect directly from your modem because your ISP assigns you an IP address using DHCP. MAKE SURE that your router is set to be used as a DHCP server. Otherwise, you ain't gettin' nothin'... Can you at least get to your setup screen for the router?

Sorry if you tried this already... I doubt the installation CD did this for you....

Im sure you followed the directions correctly, but ive reset my router a hundred times and ive messed it up a few times before.

first power everything down. including modem
computer, and router.

turn the power onto the router.
hit the reset switch when the lights stop flashing. (may not be neccesary)
plug the modem in.
wait for the modem to initialize.(may take several minutes)
power the computer on.

I have a wireless network and sometimes if the remote reciever is hooked up, the router wont connect like it should. (to any of the computers)
For unexplained reasons sometimes I have to reboot the computer after all of the above steps arer taken before it recongize my connection.

If it is anything liek my model, you cant access any configurations untill the router is registering as conected. it may even have to be connected to the internet.

only other things I cna think of is
a PCI conflict with your NIC
a loose NIC.
a bad router
a bad NIC
. dont think i have ever seen a shorted out RJ45 cable.
